Brennan, Marie: Warrior and Witch

Warrior and Witch
Writer: Marie Brennan
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 420

It's been a while since I read the first book of this duology, Doppelganger (or now titled Warrior thanks to the re-release), but I'm glad I finally got around the conclusion (also titled, thanks to the re-release, as Witch). Brennan's prose has improved with this second book, and the problems I had with Doppelganger I don't have with Warrior and Witch, which made me quite a happy camper. And I will add that I feel these books are best read back-to-back. Doppelganger stands on its own, but really, these two books make up a whole, and it's important to read them in order to get the whole story.

The premise: when a witch is born, a doppelganger is created. In order for that witch to achieve her full powers, the doppelganger MUST be killed, or the witch's magic will spin out of control and kill them both. Only Mirei has found a way out of this bloody tradition, and not everyone is so accepting of the change of rules. The witching community has divided, one side determined to embrace Mirei and her new magic, and the other side determined to destroy not only Mirei, but all the other doppelgangers as well. Mirei must protect these girls while trying to help mend the rift between the two camps, and stay alive in the process. Because her new magic is killing her.

The full review, with spoilers, may be found in my LJ. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome.

REVIEW: Marie Brennan's WARRIOR AND WITCH

Happy Reading! :)

On racism against Roma people in Italy. It's very disturbing.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/aug/17/familyandrelationships.roma

It is an image that shocked the world: two young Gypsy children lie dead for three hours on an Italian beach while, feet away, a carefree couple enjoy a leisurely picnic. Dan McDougall travels to the Roma camps of Naples to meet the dead girls' mother and finds fear and bitterness - and a country in danger of forgetting its far-Right past

I hope this doesn't sound overtly philosophical-what I really want to do is basically draw attention to a concrete (horrible) reality in contemporary Italy, but oh_annalouise's post prompted me to think on posting this about why institutionalised prejudices such as racism completely mess up any kind of empathy we might have had to begin with when reacting to the deaths of certain 'types' of people (ugh).

It boggles my mind that as humans we are so able to let society shape our prejudices and worldview, to ingrain us with such racism/hatred/a horrific kind of indifference.

Wildlings at Gencon

Gamers attending last weekend's GenCon in Indianapolis found a surprise waiting for them at the Dark Sword Miniatures booth -- a half dozen new figures in the "George R.R. Martin Masterworks" range, being rolled out for the first time as special convention pre-release.

The talented Jeff Grace sculpted these new additions to the Dark Sword range, six wildings from beyond the Wall, to face off against the Night's Watch figures featured in the first wave.

Two are spearwives, the women warriors of the far north, but don't look for ludicrous chainmail bikinis on these gals. Fur and leather are a lot more practical in the wild.

The wildlings were a special GenCon run, available for purchase only at the convention, but Dark Sword expects to make them available for mail-order in another month or two, as soon as the rest of "wave 1.5" is ready. Gencon attendees also got a glimpse at prototypes of some of the other figures in the iopeline, including a court lady, two gold cloak guardsmen, and a stunning 54mm sculpt of Daenerys and her newborn dragons, fresh from the fires of Khal Drogo's funeral pyre, all from Tom Meier. Watch this space for pictures for those figures, when they are available.

We'll also have pictures of the winning entries in the painting contest. My friends at Dark Sword tell me that some of them were truly spectacular. I look forward to seeing them.

Blades

posted by: [info]rjordan_blog

Writing as Robert Jordan, James Rigney made knowledge his stock in trade. In order to write effectively about men and non-men who fought with swords and lances, he hefted them, he swung them. He studied what life is like for a man who makes his meat and beer with a battle axe. He would hold a spear or sword and contemplate the use of it in combat. Some swords are better in small areas, whereas long swords are better suited for larger space. He’d use them to learn about things like that. Einstein is quoted as saying, “I have no particular talent. I am only passionately curious.” RJ, Jim was that, and more.

Jim collected all manner of bladed weapons. In Jason’s description of his trip to Charleston for RJ’s funeral, he took some photos of the room outside RJ’s office which the family lovingly calls “The Armory”. Those photos appeared on RJ’s blog, but they only gave you a glimpse of the collection. It is immense. The blades were Jim’s passion, not Harriet’s, so he very generously left them to the three guys close to him: his brother, son and me. The three of us have given many pieces away to others who were also very close to RJ. We invited Brandon Sanderson to wander through and pick something of his liking, something that spoke to him. He sent me the most wonderful thank you note and has placed the sword, a samurai, on the wall above his writing desk. To accompany the sword, Brandon had a plaque engraved with warm words about RJ and looks at it for inspiration as he pens the last of Jim’s epic. Some of Jim’s blades have been placed in the hands of soldiers, airmen and Marines who will find use of them when they are deployed.

After selecting items for ourselves and sharing many with others, we still find ourselves with a collection that is, well, unmanageable. Each of us would very much like to hang onto ALL the items, but eventually, in the interest of spatial or marital harmony, most of it would have to go. So, we have decided to do that sooner rather than later. We know that Jim would have wanted some of his fans to have the opportunity to own some of his personal items.

The actual mechanics of this will be handled by a close family friend, Greg Kitchens. Greg is a Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves. He is a military weapons and history expert, though he would humbly deny that fact. Greg spent hours sitting with Jim, discussing the military art, history and the numerous items in both their collections. We are honored that a blade from the collection will be in Greg’s boot when he goes to the Sand Box this December. What he doesn’t know off hand, he diligently researches himself, or finds an expert in that particular field. Greg is performing exacting research on the pieces and will offer to the best of our ability a description of each item. Every piece will also be accompanied by a letter of authenticity stating that it came from the personal collection of Robert Jordan. This letter will be individually signed by Harriet and Greg, our “Armorer”.

RJ’s blade collection contains swords, knives, hatchets, and spears. Some are antique, some reproductions, and some are modern. There are blades for hunting, fishing, camping, survival, fighting and everything in between. Most are in excellent or new condition. There are a few custom blades and many good blades from reputable manufacturers. Jim appreciated quality and simple, functional practicality yet had an eye for historical significance. His collection reflects those values. There are very few fancy wall-hangers and a plethora of solidly useful weapons, high-quality practice weapons and tools.

We will be offering the Robert Jordan collection on eBay beginning over the next couple of weeks. Some of the more valuable antiques and custom knives will undoubtedly appeal to collectors, as well as WOT fans.

QOTW: Buffy’s Relationships Are My Own

Aug. 19th, 2008 | 05:18 pm

Originally published at Jingwen. Please leave any comments there.

In keeping with yesterday’s vampiric theme, some fan rambling regarding Buffy Summers, vampire slayer extraordinaire. Her love life actually reflects my love life, and probably the love lives of many women out there. Yes, this is despite the fact that she dated vampires. I’m talking in general terms, mmkay?

  1. Random Flirtage (Scott, etc.): The randoms here and there in high/middle school that you have flirtations with. Nothing’s ever going to come of it, but they’re a nice ego boost while they last.
  2. Angel: The first true love. Eminently ‘unsuitable’ in other people’s eyes for some reason or another, whether it’s because they’re too old, too vampiric, too much of a bad influence, whatever. Yet, despite other people’s disapproval, you’re hopelessly in love with them. This love sticks with you forever, no matter how many others you find yourself with in the course of your life. You’ll never forget them.
  3. Parker: The rebound. Whether it’s a one night stand, or a slightly longer relationship. You don’t actually like them as a person. You’re in it for one reason only - they act as a balm for your injured emotions after the painful breakfup with the first true love.
  4. Riley: The all-around nice person, who everyone likes. When it comes down to it, you don’t actually like them - you try to convince yourself that you do, but really, they’re just good for filling in the space of “eminently appropriate partner” who’s the complete antithesis to your first true love. You’re with them because you think their niceness will be a nice change from the drama of your previous relationships, but inevitably, you’ll just get bored and personally sabotage the relationship.
  5. Spike: The adult relationship. It’s about passion, love, and explosive arguments with equally explosive make-ups. The emotions run so deep that you would do anything for the other person…even sacrifice yourself for them.

Have a think about it. It’s a little bit like a horoscope in that this theory could potentially be applicable to anyone, but it definitely works.

Question of the Week: Is this theory applicable to yourself? If not, is there some other media depiction of relationships that you can relate to?

Showdown: Meyer vs. Rowling

Aug. 18th, 2008 | 11:28 pm
posted by: [info]eclectic62442

Originally published at Jingwen. Please leave any comments there.

I have a confession to make. I’ve yet to read any of Stephanie Meyer’s books. There it is. I’ve said it.

In a way, it’s not so surprising, as I hardly fall into the target demographic. That’s to say, I’m not a thirteen-year-old girl pining for her fanged knight in shining armour (though, I am a girl). I’ve had my fair share of fanged crushes (mmm…David Boreanaz, the original vampire with a tortured soul), but I got over that once I hit eighteen. This is of course, discounting the past couple of weeks when I’ve been systematically watching all my Buffy and Angel DVDs again. Anyway.

But, as a series written by an author that many have touted as the next J.K. Rowling, you’d imagine that my interest would be somewhat piqued. Another series as spellbinding as Harry Potter? Could I possibly say no? It may be out of a misguided sense of loyalty, but I almost feel that if I was to read this series and enjoy it as much as I did Potter, I’d be betraying Rowling. I know, I’m certifiably insane and illogical. It does mean that I’m going to avoid reading it…as long as I can keep avoiding the furor over it.

Hi everyone,

The mods would like to announce a change in the application procedure to join [info]feminist. From here on out, in order to be accepted, prospective members will need to email the mod team explaining a) why they consider themselves feminist, if they do, and b) why they would like to join [info]feminist. We're mostly doing this to cut down on possible arbitrariness in the application process, as well as to give prospectives a chance to advocate for their acceptance. It has always been our policy that rejected members can email us to be reconsidered, so this cuts out the middle step.

Thanks for being a great community!

Hi, Web Goblin here. I will be guest-blogging for Mr. G as needed over the next four weeks while he's in China.

I just wanted to get that out of the way at the start, as there's been some confusion. The following email touches on this and related matters, deserving an interstitial reply:

I presume this will be intercepted and read by the guest bloggers, as Neil is apparently going to China to achieve (more) enlightenment at the Shau-lin monestary, or something. I may have missed a point or two.

"Ask Neil" still goes to Neil and Neil alone. If you want to contact me (the web goblin) you have to use the Site Inquiry form.

Suggestions for the blog:

Make the "post by" title at the TOP of the entry rather than at the bottom, and make it a bit higher contrast. That way, at the beginning of the post, we know who's talking. This isn't a problem when 98% of the posts are by Neil, but now that there's going to be a smorgasbord of posters, I'd probably help a lot to know at the beginning to know who was posting. So if Lorraine posted, for instance, talking about "her Dad" we'd know that it was someone other than Neil that was the subject.

Done. Good call.

The other thing is it would be cool to get a brief introduction to the players by name. Obviously you shouldn't post your name and address, or even real names. And Maddy, Holly, and Lorraine wouldn't need intros. But who's "Dan Guy"? Is he the same as "Web Goblin"? Just a single sentence, as deep as a playbook character introduction. Such as "I'm Jane, the person at Blogger who's responsible for rooting out all the annoying single-instance tags that Neil puts in his posts, bless him".

As you wish.

Dramatis Personae.

in which a blog census is taken

Neil :: The man, the myth, the legend. The man needs no introduction, obviously, but what about the latter two? I have some theories.

To the left, Neil Gaiman. Neil sang and played bass in a punk band in 1977. He is suspected of having an army of clones.

To the right, Gary Lightbody. Gary is the lead singer/lyricist of Snow Patrol. He was "born" in 1977.

Warren Ellis hates Snow Patrol. [citation needed]  Warren Ellis hates clones.

Is Gary Lightbody one of Neil's clones? The evidence seems incontrovertible.

Lorraine :: The Fabulous Lorraine is Neil's assistant. Her past is shrouded in mystery.

Some histories claim that she was born among a roving band of fiddling Roma-Australian (or Romaustralian) pirates and then left them to wander the Songshan mountains in search of the legendary Shaolin Warrior Assistant monks. Upon finding them she survived the Ten Trials of the Personal Assistant, the very least of which is opening a box full of sand without spilling a single grain on the carpet, and so was granted entry. After a decade spent training in seclusion she re-emerged, appearing no older than the day she had entered, and voyaged to America in search of a master worthy of her skills.

Other histories claim that the newborn Lorraine was left at the gates of those Shaolin Warrior Assistant monks and was taken in by them and raised in their ways, learning to decipher a travel itinerary before she could talk and mastering the secret art of meat explosion before she could walk. On the day when she turned eighteen, having attained the level of "Fabulous" through her training, she departed the monastery in search of further challenges. Travelling West, she allowed herself to be captured by wandering Romaustralian fiddler pirates in order to learn their fiddling ways. Within a month she challenged their leader for supremacy, killed him with an explosive Chicken Cordon Bleu, and was crowned their Queen. Sadly, her fiddling prowess was soon so exemplary that word spread far and wide and other Romaustralian fiddler pirate Queens began arriving to challenge her, each invoking their right to Suzuki-at-Sunrise, a duel to the death. Rather than be forced to bloody her bow, the Fabulous Lorraine abdicated her crown and sailed to the new world in search of a master worthy of her varied talents.

Which is the true story? It hardly seems to matter.

Web Elf :: The Web Elf was once the webmistress of Mr. G's site, before her retirement. She was eventually outed as Olga Nunes. You can see pictures of her and everything. This is sad on one hand, because the Web Elf and the Web Goblin had all of these plans involving wearing masks and going incognito, but on the other hand what musician doesn't need a little free publicity? The Web Elf is brave and kind and did we mention brave? She is currently traveling the world, either following her muse or bringing her own muse to others.

Web Goblin :: Hi. I'm the Web Goblin, aka Dan Guy. I took over when the Web Elf retired over a year ago. I wrote a bio over at the Neverwear store that pretty much covers it, I think.

Mr. G sends the following from his cellphone:

In Taipei airport there were toilets for men, women, enormous telephones, daleks and people feeding giant venus flytraps.

I’m A Man’s Woman

Originally published at Jingwen. Please leave any comments there.

I went out with some girl friends on Friday night for dinner at a Chinese restaurant called Kum Den (oh the possible wordplay). We’d all met fairly recently, over the Australian summer of 2006/2007, when we were all in China for the same language study program. We’d stayed in touch as well, which is surprisingly hard because for a lot of people, their holiday selves are quite different from their regular selves. It’s the whole “I don’t have to think about work or school” unstressful lifestyle, where you can party until dawn without consequences. When you return home, you quite often find that you simply have nothing in common with those that you got on well with when away.

In any case, the dinner was notable perhaps because they are pretty much my only girl friends, and vice versa as well. Not one of the four of us present at the get-together have more than a handful of close female friends, yet we all have a whole phonebook’s worth of close male friends. We recognise in each other a kindred spirit - someone down-to-earth, practical and without emotional complications, someone more at ease with men than women.

I’ve always had a problem - women hate me, men love me. I’m a girly girl in the way I dress myself, but I’m a man’s woman in the way I act.I drink beer, I fart, I burp, I swear all the fucking time, I make crude jokes, I love watching football, I scratch my crotch (exaggeration!) and I ogle hot women walking past. Apparently the large majority of my fellow sex don’t like to be friends with women like this, though they’re generally happy to indulge this behaviour in their men. Who would’ve guessed?

My fellow dinner partners have similar problems: one is so down-to-earth and practical that she can’t help but be scathing of the high school dramas and cliques that seem to come packaged with the large majority of women of our age group; another is so incredibly beautiful, talented, and intelligent that’s she’s often viewed as a threat; another is so earthy and sensual (even more so than myself I’d say) that she’s automatically stereotyped as a dangerous maneater to avoid.

When we get together, we’re grown ups. It’s hard to find another group of females in their early twenties here in Melbourne, who when they get together, don’t get together for the express purpose of getting pissed and dancing till dawn. Rather, when we get together we make it a point to try new restaurants every time (hidden restaurants especially, down Melbourne’s myriad network of alleyways), sitting at the table for hours with beers, just laughing and talking.

Getting together for the purpose of making conversation and eating good food, rather than for the purpose of dancing to music that ensures you don’t talk to the people you’re with, is a lost art in the Melbourne twenty-something scene. Sad really.

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK leads off the ABA Fall 2008 Children's Indie Next List. Looking at the rest of the list, it appears that if you want to target ages 4-8 then you're best bet is to have a naughty protagonist, especially if its an animal, whereas if you are writing for ages 9-12 then you should have "dragon" or "magician" in the title. Look for my new children's book, The Very Naughty Dragon Magician, this spring.

AMANDA & DANGER ENSEMBLE SEEKING LONDON CRASH SPACE/REHEARSAL SPACE
15-26th SEPTEMBER

we (me and 5 crazy Australians, AKA the danger ensemble, who will be with me all year performing on stage) are coming to London to prepare for our European tour and are looking for somewhere to crash close to central London!
ideally you live in an amazing place with several vacant boudoirs atop a rehearsal studio (or a big garage) that you would like to give over to us from the 15th - 26th of September.

we need a relatively comfy space - sharing beds is fine but we do need them.

wireless internet is pretty essential. heating and being close to the tube would be a huge plus. it doesn't have to be a palace - we can improvise - if you know anyone on summer vacation or that has a space that can be made livable for a couple of weeks LET US KNOW!

if you JUST have a rehearsal space idea or JUST a place to stay, indicate that. we may end up commuting if we don't find both in one place.

in addition, if you can recommend/know of any cheap rehearsal studios please let us know, anything big enough to accommodate 7 people and a few string players moving around. bigger than a bedroom, smaller than a train station.

in exchange?

um. we'll make you dinner. buy you drinks, love you, we can hook you up with tix for the ICA show, any other european shows, free merch, and if you're into it, the whole ensemble will possibly also make out with you.

steven from The Danger Ensemble is salivating in anticipation of your email so hit him up: tour@dangerensemble.com

(From Amanda Palmer)

They're urgently in need of last minute housing arrangements, so if you know of a spot let them know ASAP. (The sooner you email them, the sooner you can redeem your giant group hug.) Pass it on.

Every time you watch TV you feed the beast. You help legitimize the view of the world at it is presented on television. Television is filled with sexist imagery and messages. It's filled with racist stereotypes. Now and then when I'm visiting someone and I watch some TV, I'm always shocked at just how bad it is-- especially the sexism-- When you don't watch it every day these things jump out at you more.

So, I'm just going to make the suggestion that you give tuning out a try if you have not already. Don't let people waste your leisure time trying to sell you products so they can make a profit. This might not be so bad if they didn't insult you while they were doing it. But they do.

I mean why put up with it? It's just not worth it: when you watch TV you end up talking about the shows, you become their little promotions machine that tries to get other people to watch. It's just so invasive when you think about it.

So, I'm going to just put it out there: turn it off, screw 'em.

Any day is a good day, why not today?

Just because I’m aware that I’m being labelled by certain parties as a brain-washed Communist/Red China sympathiser (you are so subtle), a short list of some of the many things the Chinese central government does that I don’t agree with:

  1. State-controlled media. I support a free media (rather than the monopoly on news by the People’s Daily), a breaking-down of internet censorship and the elimination of firewalls prohibiting access to certain sites, etc. I spit on Google for censoring the search results you get when doing a search within China.
  2. Labour laws and official unions. While both technically exist in China, the former is hard to enforce on ground level, especially when considering the official workers unions are often staffed by those who are comfortable taking bribes from factory workers to overlook violations of the aforementioned laws. Independent unions need to be established, and the laws themselves need to be revised to include:
    1. Minimum wage of at least 5RMB an hour, rather than the 50 jiao (50 Chinese cents) which is the current average. It only comes to $1USD an hour which doesn’t sound like much, but which is ample when compared to the Chinese standard of living where you can get an excellent meal for 3RMB.
    2. Regulation of the hours that a single person is allowed to work over a seven day period. No more than eleven hours a day over six days - they must be granted a day of rest on the seventh.
    3. Government-regulated inspections of factory dormitory living conditions to ensure they meet standards to be specified by the WHO.
    4. Government-regulated inspections of working conditions (within the factories themselves) to ensure they meet workplace health and safety standards.

Among other workplace laws and regulations of course, but the above would be what I consider to be the most urgent issues for the Chinese workforce.

a sophisticated desire for chaos

FOUR WEEKS?!? Mr. G is going to be gone for four weeks?? I am as dismayed by this news as you. This is terrible. This is calamitous. This is... unexpectedly exciting?

He has no idea how much trouble I can get into in four weeks.

I have already begun formulating Secret Plans. This is the month. Tell your friends.

The fourth Coraline featurette has been posted. This one is my favorite of the five, because of a certain cosmic alignment of talents hinted at by the title up there.

I decided that none of you should be spared my attempts at humour in the labels, so I have gone back to work under the hood and the feed now includes them at the bottom! (Secret Plat #1: CHECK)

Only the official feed includes the labels; all of the deprecated feeds, and the one straight from blogger, still lack them. (This means that if you are not seeing the labels at the bottom of each entry in your feed reader then you should resubscribe to the feed via the previous link. If you experience any issues, please contact me.

Because I was feeling silly, I created a page on Fundable.com to raise money to buy Mr. G a RoboPanda. Fundable is cool because it only takes the money if the goal is reached. I thought maybe people could throw in $0.50 or a dollar, and I would post pictures of the look on his face when he got it -- but when I got to the end of the sign-up I learned that the minimum pledge was $10. And, I mean, $10 is a little much for a gag gift that's going to collect dust in the attic, likely scaring the fur off of Zoe the blind cat. I link to it now only because I spent so long photoshopping that image and hate to waste it.

Edit: Two of you have already pledged $10! I.... I don't know what to say to that.

Edit: Three! (Breaks into song: I cannot believe my eyes. / Are the fans collaboratively making buys? / Because it seems to me / some kind of insanity / is on the rise!)

Eight Nine more nutjobs generous benefactors and this will actually happen.

The question now becomes, do I give it to him in the box or do I take it out and put batteries in it and video his reaction when I place it on the signing table and it starts to dance?

Edit: Well. That took just under two hours. You people are incredible. Look for video footage here at the end of September!

Hello Feminist!

Normally, I would only post this on local action groups. But in light of the recent CDC statistics that disclosed that HIV/AIDS infections is on the rise and that past stats were underreported, I was hoping that folks could spread the word and support ACT UP Philly as they connect with other HIV/AIDS orgs across the country in preparation for a large scale action/demo in DC for November, that will address the presidential candidates. They need both local and national assistance, so please be in touch. Their contact info. is contained at the bottom of this forwarded message.

Thanks,
d

ACT UP Philadelphia, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, is now in its 20th
year of fighting to end the AIDS crisis through direct action. We are
planning a substantial action in Washington DC in late November, after we
know who the next President will be. Whoever wins, we demand a plan to end
AIDS at home and abroad. We need your help to pull this off! Put your skills
to use, and learn some new ones from us!

We have internship positions available for the following projects:
